Overflowing Sewer Line – Manly Vale

The call came through early on a Saturday morning from a 70-year old’s Son. The Report was an overflowing sewer line in a townhouse in Manly Vale. The Technician was quick to respond and diagnose the sewer was completely blocked.

The high-pressure water jetter was the first course of action to break through the stubborn Blockage. As the high pressure Drain cleaner blasted the blockage until the backed up sewer broke free and sewer quickly run down the pipe. It is revealed the cause of the blockage is tree roots. A large number of fine needle roots that are bound tightly together. Even though the water runs through the small hole that was bored through the roots by the water jetter the pipe still remained full of fine roots.

The remaining roots in the pipe are shredded using a large cutting head. The pressure of the water blast and cuts everything that crosses its path as it moves back and forth across the tree root section of the pipe.

The CCTV camera shows that the roots have come through on a joint. The pipe had been repaired at some stage in earlier years and when the repair was done the plumber had used a rubber joiner called a plumb quick. These have been around for about 20 years and are a great way to repair a section of pipe that has been cut out and put back together. The downfall is that tree roots can grow between the rubber and the pipe and once the tree roots grow into the pipe where they find water the roots grow thick and fast in the pipe until they plug the pipe tight. They grow so tight that water can not even past through.

It was recommended to our customer from the DrainWorks Technician that to stop the roots growing back it would be advisable to install a reline patch over the section of pipe where the roots were growing in. Our customer accepted the recommendations and the work was completed the next day.
